WORLD SOCIAL FORUM
(WSF)
(2006 Karachi)

                                                           History of World Social Forum

The World Social Forum (WSF) is an international mega forum held by members of the alternative globalization movement to coordinate world campaigns, share and refine organizing strategies, and inform each other about movements from around the world and their issues. It tends to meet in January when its great capitalist rival, the World Economic Forum is meeting in Davos, Switzerland. This is not a coincidence. The date was chosen because of the logistical difficulty of organizing a mass protest in Davos and to try to overshadow the coverage of the World Economic Forum in the news media.

In 2006 the WSF was a polycentric event and held in different cities around the world, including Caracas, Venezuela and Bamako, Mali (both in January); and Karachi, Pakistan(24th-29th March 2006). In 2007 it will be in Nairobi, Kenya. In Karachi more than 25000 people registered for the event and at least another 50000 visited the event. Social activities from as many as 58 countries participated in the event and it provided a great opportunity to PNAC for disseminating its message not only to a great number of people but also to develop regional & international linkages.

The slogan for WSF 2006 is "Another World is Possible". Through this slogan, the Forum comprises speakers, workshops, panels, debates, marches and cultural events. It provides an open platform for activists and intellectuals alike to discuss different issues and come up with viable and practicable strategies to encounter them.

PNAC in WSF:

WSF is the largest forum of its kind in the world, which attracts civil society organization from all over the world, development professionals, activists and general public. Pakistan National AIDS Consortium (PNAC) actively participated in World Social Forum from 24th--29th March 2006.PNAC did not only put up a HIV and AIDS Information Post in the forum for all five days but also organized a seminar. The World Social Forum provides a unique opportunity of advocacy for the rights of the people living with HIV and AIDS and also for the rights of the vulnerable and marginalized.
