Men Having Sex with Mens
(MSM)

 
 

Organization and locations of MSMs in the project area

  • Geographical / Social mapping of IDUs in the project area

Behavior change communication (BCC) strategies

  • Development of a detailed BCC implementation plan based on the information from mapping of behaviors, practices and attitudes of MSMs, and their clients and partners

  • Hiring, training and supervision of staff and/or peer educators/outreach workers to undertake BCC activities

  • Review and revision of BCC strategy and activities based on revised mapping of MSMs, project experience and behavioral surveillance results

Condom education and distribution

  • Inclusion of condom education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

  • Provision of condoms to peer educators and outreach workers for distribution to MSM

  • Review and revising of condom education and distribution activities based on revised mapping, project experience and behavioral surveillance results

Primary healthcare curative services and services for sexually transmitted infections on syndromic management using national guidelines

  • Provision of services for curative primary healthcare and sexually transmitted infections to MSM networks, their clients and partners

Education on sexual health and sexually transmitted infections, and access to acceptable and appropriate services for sexually transmitted infections

  • Development of a detailed education and services plan for sexually transmitted infections particularly around anal problems, based on the information from mapping of MSM, including education for sexually transmitted infections in BCC strategies, materials and activities

  • Training of local service providers who are used frequently by MSM networks in provision of services for sexually transmitted infections

  • Regularly review and monitoring of the quality of services for sexually transmitted infections used by the MSM networks in the project area particularly around anal problems, and support the improvement and maintenance of quality services

  • Linkage services for sexually transmitted infections with referral to specialist services

  • Review of education and service activities for sexually transmitted infections based on revised mapping of MSM networks in the project area, project experience and annual behavioral surveillance results

Access to Voluntary Counseling and Testing services

  • Inclusion of VCT education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

  • Establishment of VCT services so that MSM have effective and appropriate access to VCT service package

  • Provision of VCT training to project staff to ensure accessible and acceptable services for MSM

  • Monitoring of the experience of MSM in accessing VCT services, and taking remedial action for improving VCT educational activities and testing facilities

Enabling environment in the project area

  • Development of a plan to promote a more positive environment for HIV prevention among MSM in the project area, based on the information from mapping of MSM

  • Undertaking advocacy and educational activities to promote understanding of local police officials and other public sector officers towards the importance of HIV prevention and in working with MSM networks for prevention against HIV infection

  • Monitoring the local environmental factors which might affect ability of MSM to protect them from HIV infection

  • Working with MSM networks and take action as needed

Empowerment activities

  • Development and implementation of empowerment activities (e.g. literacy or negotiating skills), based on the information obtained from mapping of MSM networks

  • Establishment of drop-in centers

  • Development of a referral system for other key support activities, such as legal services

Review and revision of empowerment activities based on revised mapping of MSM networks and project experience
