Female Sex Workers
(FSW)

 
 

Organization and locations of sex work in the project area

  • Mapping in project area (how often depends on the frequency of change in sex work in the project area, especially in mobile sex work)

 

Appropriate BCC strategies

  • Inclusion of reproductive health and substance abuse components in BCC strategies

  • Hiring, training and supervision of staff and/or peer educators to undertake BCC activities

  • Review of BCC strategy and activities based on revised mapping, project experience and behavioral surveillance results

 

Condom education and distribution through field staff.

  • Inclusion of condom education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

  • Ensure that condoms are available on-site in brothels

  • Provision of condoms to peer educators and outreach workers for distribution to FSWs

  • Review of condom education and distribution activities based on revised mapping, project experience and behavioral surveillance results

 

STI education and access to acceptable and appropriate STI services

  • Development of a detailed STI education and services plan, based on the information from mapping

  • Provision of STI and PHC services to FSWs and their families and clients

  • Inclusion of STI education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

  • Training of local STI service providers used frequently by FSWs in good quality STI services

  • Regularly review and monitoring of the quality of STI services used by FSWs, and support to the improvement and maintenance of quality services

  • Provision of specialist STI services for FSWs if this is a preferred service approach

  • Ensuring condom promotion and distribution through local STI services used by FSWs

  • Linkage or integration of reproductive health services with STI services; including PHC services and referral to specialist services (e.g. gynecology)

  • Review and revision of STI education and service activities based on revised mapping, project experience and behavioral surveillance results

 

BCC on VCT, including access to VCT services

  • Inclusion of VCT education in BCC strategies, materials and activities

  • Establishment of linkage with VCT services so that FSWs have effective and appropriate access to services

  • Provision of training to VCT staff to ensure accessible and acceptable services to FSWs

  • Monitoring the experience of FSWs in accessing VCT services, and taking remedial action in the VCT educational activities and with the VCT services where needed

 

Enabling environment in the project area

  • Development of a plan to promote a more positive environment for HIV prevention with FSWs in the project area, based on the information from mapping

  • Undertaking advocacy and educational activities to promote understanding of local police officials and officers towards the importance of HIV prevention and in working with FSWs for HIV prevention

  • Undertaking advocacy and educational activities to promote understanding of local government towards HIV prevention and the importance of working with FSWs for HIV prevention

  • Monitoring of the local environmental factors which might affect the FSWs ability to prevent HIV, and work with FSWs and take action as needed

 

Empowerment activities

  • Development and implementation of empowerment activities (e.g. literacy or self-defense training), based on the information from mapping

  • Development of referral system for other key support activities, e.g., legal services, child protection

  • Review and revision of empowerment activities based on revised mapping and project experience
