National Consultation on Monitoring the Situation and Responses of IDUs

A two day National Consultation on Monitoring the Situation and Responses for Injecting Drug Users was organized by UNODC & UNAIDS in collaboration with Govt. of Pakistan at Bhurban on 31st July & 1st August, 2008. The national consultation was managed by Pakistan AIDS Control Federation (PNAC).

The objectives of the national consultation were:

  1. Consensus on the size of the target population for planning of services, and of the magnitude of the target population;

  2. Understanding of the different methodologies inclusion criteria, and scope of main assessment studies conducted in Pakistan;

  3. Comprehensive package of interventions for injecting drug users within the context of universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care and its related costs;

  4. How to set targets for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care for injecting drug users;

  5. Institutionalizing monitoring the situation and evaluation of the responses to injecting drug users.

Representatives of various national and international organizations and government agencies participated in the consultation. In the result of the consultation recommendations were made which will be shared by UNODC and UNAIDS with other stakeholders.
 

General Body Meeting of Pakistan AIDS Control Federation

A first annual General Body Meeting and the 14th Board meeting of Pakistan AIDS Control Federation was held in Islamabad on 26th-27th July, 2008. The agenda of the meetings was to discuss the current situation of PNAC, the future strategy for the progress of the organization and selection of new office bearers.

In the Board of Directors’ meeting, the new office bearers were elected. Prof. Muhammad Ismail was elected as the chairman, Mr. Sirbuland Khan Jogezai as Vice Chairman, Mr. Ejaz Ahmed as Director Execution and Mr. Abid Ashraf as Secretary.

25th International Candlelight Memorial

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is among the worldfs oldest movements by civil society for HIV/AIDS remembrance, awareness and community action. The theme for the commemoration of Candlelight Memorial 2008 is "STOP HIV AND AIDS... NEVER GIVE UP". This was the 25th anniversary of this memorial and it was first time that PNAC commemorated in Islamabad, in which representatives of various national & International organizations participated. Dr. Tariq Fazal Ch. MNA participated as chief guest. Furthermore, representatives of the association of People living with HIV and AIDS also participated and also expressed their problems. A theatre play was also presented by a street theatre group. In the end the candles were lit by the participants in the memory of those who lost their lives due to AIDS and to show solidarity to the PLHIV.  SNNHA also organized the memorial in Karachi on the same day.

PPTCT Consultations

PNAC is organizing a series of Pakistan wide consultations on prevention of parent to child transmission titled "Strengthening PPTCT Client Identification and Referral" with the support of UNICEF. The main aim of these consultations is to strengthen the referral systems between organizations working with high risk groups and medical facilities offering PPTCT services along with spreading word on where these PPTCT services are located so as to engage a maximum number of positive pregnant women in the chain of PPTCT services for ultimately reducing risk and incidence of PPTCT.

Training on Mainstreaming HIV and AIDS for Plan Pakistan

PNAC conducted a training workshop for the staff of PLAN Pakistan country office on 5th of June 2008 on mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS. Objective of the training was to make the participant aware about the concept of mainstreaming of HIV in their program and its importance  as an action and also to asses project staff capacity on HIV and AIDS for mainstreaming. Total 25 participants attended the workshop in Islamabad. Earlier PNAC conducted three training workshops for the Plan Pakistan Staff in Vehari, Mansehra and Chakwal with the same objective

PNAC conducted training of Concern Worldwide (NWFP) Staff on BCC, Basic HIV & Mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS

PNAC conducted three days training workshop in Abbottabad for CONCERN NWFP staff on BCC, Basic HIV and mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS in rehabilitation program. Objectives of the training were;

  • To understand the difference between communication, education, motivation and information
  • Apply appropriate techniques for interpersonal communication and basic counselling
  • Understand the ethical aspects of interpersonal communication and counselling
  • Identify and address stigma and discrimination in the communities
  • Learn facilitation skills and BCC on MS
  • Understand why mainstreaming is necessary as an action
  • Asses project staff capacity on HIV and AIDS for mainstreaming

Total 20 participants from partner NGOs of CONCERN Worldwide and CONCERN NWFP staff attended the workshop. This training workshop was the continuity of the trainings conducted by PNAC earlier this year with same objectives mentioned above for Concern Staff in Islamabad, Kotli Satian and Rawalpindi

Training Sessions for DWE in Islamabad

PNAC conducted a training workshop on HIV management Plan, Prevention of HIV and Stigma & Discrimination for Directorate of Workersf Education (DWE) in the first week of June. The representatives from various organizations, Union Leaders, teachers and workers from all over Pakistan participated in the Workshop.
